How the Competitor Backlink Gap tool works
The tool reads your website to build a product profile, identifies your direct competitors in the same niche, and then cross-references their backlink sources against your own. Sites that appear in competitor backlink profiles but not yours are surfaced as gap opportunities.
Results are categorized by opportunity type:
Resource pages — curated link lists where your competitor appears and you don't. These are the highest-priority gap opportunities because the editorial intent to link to your category is already established.
Blog mentions — individual posts that reference a competitor in context. If your product solves the same problem, you have a factual basis for outreach: the site has already written about this topic.
Link roundups — recurring content digests that included a competitor. Getting added to the same roundup is often a matter of submitting for future editions.
Competitor blog posts — posts on competitor-adjacent sites that cross-link within their ecosystem. Less directly actionable but useful for understanding which editorial networks your competitors have relationships with.
Each result shows which competitor the linking site references, giving you context for how to frame outreach.
Three ways founders use this tool
Finding your quickest link wins. If a resource page links to three competitors and not you, and your product is a credible addition to that list, one well-crafted email can close the gap. Gap opportunities on resource pages and roundups typically require the least explanation in outreach because the site has already signaled interest in your category.
Understanding your competitive link landscape. Before building any link-building strategy, knowing which sites are actively linking into your category tells you which editorial relationships matter most. If ten high-quality sites all link to the same competitor, that competitor has category authority you need to close.
Prioritizing outreach effort. Not every gap opportunity is worth pursuing. Use the Backlink Price Calculator to estimate the value of a link from a given domain before spending time on outreach. And if you want to expand beyond competitor gaps to find net-new opportunities in your niche, run the Backlink Opportunity Finder alongside this tool.
What the tool cannot tell you
Competitor backlink data is sourced from available indexes and may not reflect every inbound link, particularly from newer or smaller sites. A gap result means the tool has not identified a link from that source to your site — it doesn't mean one doesn't exist.
The tool also can't tell you why a site linked to your competitor specifically. Sometimes it's a genuine editorial endorsement; sometimes it's a paid placement or a reciprocal arrangement. Read the source page before outreach to understand the link context.
For a daily gap analysis that refreshes as competitors earn new links, Mentiohunt's backlink queue tracks competitor link activity continuously and surfaces new gap opportunities each morning.
